Canterbury Wholefoods has been run as a Workers’ Co-operative since 1997, when the business was bought by a number of the present staff from its previous owner, but the store has been trading in the City since 1979. During its lifetime Canterbury Wholefoods has operated from several different locations within the City walls, and for the foreseeable future will be at the present address in Jewry Lane, where it has been since 2001. We are easy to find – just off the main drag and convenient for the bus station and both railway stations. [See Where to find us for map].

We are a totally vegetarian shop – we do not knowingly sell any animal-derived products other than dairy foods such as yoghurt, butter, cheese & eggs. We are committed to offering organic food options wherever possible, and our range of organic products is huge. We support local food producers wherever we can, and there are many fine Kentish products on our shelves, including fresh organic fruit & veg, apple juice, beer, chocolate and honey. Canterbury, Whitstable & Herne Bay is now a officially designated Fair-Trade District, and we are a prominent stockist of fairly-traded goods.

Special diets are an important part of our business, and we offer a wide range of products for vegetarians and vegans, as well as providing for those on restricted dietary regimens – for example, gluten-free, and low sugar diets. We specialise in Japanese & macrobiotic foods, and stock many other ethnic foods, including a comprehensive range of herbs & spices, many of which have an organic option. We look after our younger customers too, with a range of environmentally-friendly nappies, wipes, etc, and a good selection of organic baby food.

We have daily deliveries of fresh bread, much of it specialist [low salt, yeast-free, wheat-free etc] and our fresh fruit & veg is a mixture of produce from local farms and imported produce via Covent Garden, all of it organic. Our chillers and freezers are stocked with the widest array of specialist meatless meals, dairy-free ice cream, soya cheese, organic milk and fresh alfalfa sprouts you will find this side of London or Brighton.

Our Remedies section is suitably well-stocked with herbal tinctures, vitamins & minerals, amino acids, and everything else you might need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are plenty of homeopathic products, and there is a huge choice of natural soaps, shampoos and other bodycare items. Ousehold needs are catered for with our range of Ecover, Clearspring and other environmentally-friendly products.
